At ZOE, we’re always looking for new, science-backed ingredients to incorporate into Daily30+, our wholefood, fiber-rich gut supplement.

We recently discovered a calcified algae that meets these criteria and have added it to the existing formulation.

Called Aquamin, it’s a natural source of more than 70 minerals, including calcium, which can support gut health by contributing to the normal function of digestive enzymes.

Below, we briefly explain what Aquamin is and how it’s sourced.

    What is aquamin?

Aquamin is derived from the cytoskeleton of marine algae called Lithothamnion. Its rigid coral-like structure is formed as it absorbs minerals from its environment, creating crystals within its cell walls.

Aquamin is abundant in highly bioavailable forms of calcium and magnesium, meaning that your body can absorb them more easily than it can from other common sources.

This increased bioavailability is partly due to Aquamin's natural honeycomb structure, which provides a greater surface area for stomach acid to reach.

Aside from calcium and magnesium, Aquamin contains a further 72 trace minerals, including zinc, copper, iron, sodium, and selenium.

    Where does aquamin come from?

Lithothamnion thrives in the pristine waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, where the warmer Gulf Stream mixes with frigid Arctic seas.

Aquamin is gathered in the nutrient-rich waters of Fjord Arnarfjörður, a body of water famed for sea monsters in the remote North-West of Iceland.

As the seaweed matures, its mineral content increases. Eventually, it becomes calcified, dies, and breaks off, forming huge deposits on the ocean floor. These mineral-rich deposits are then collected.

The process has been carefully designed to ensure that the sea bed is not disturbed. It’s harvested for just a few days each week between May and September, and live Lithothamnion is left to grow in peace — only the mineral-rich remnants are collected.

During harvesting, Aquamin collectors use a grid system so that no sections of the ocean bed are overworked. Once gathered, Lithothamnion is washed and milled to produce the final product.
