OUR RESEARCH

The link between menopause and nutrition

We conducted the largest research analyses of menopause and nutrition in the world. Research participants in one study reported up to 37% lower MenoScale scores after making dietary changes (data gathered using an earlier version of the MenoScale).

“There’s so much misinformation around menopause, so it’s no surprise that many women don’t know what they’re experiencing or how to change it. I’m proud that our work may empower them to understand and improve their menopause experience.”

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Understanding your results

The MenoScale calculator is intended to provide a framework for you to understand how menopause is impacting your life, and compare your symptoms with others going through this life transition.

It does not give or replace medical advice or medical information. Your score is not a diagnosis of menopause or of the underlying causes of your symptoms. You should always talk to your doctor or other healthcare professional about any health problems you may be suffering from.

FAQ

Learn more about the MenoScale calculator

What is the MenoScale Calculator?

In simple terms, the MenoScale Calculator is an online questionnaire consisting of 20 questions around your menopause symptoms. For each symptom, you will rate how much it impacts your life: (0=not at all, 1=a little, 3=quite a bit and 5=extremely). This provides a total score out of 100. A higher score means a greater “burden” of symptoms, suggesting your symptoms are having a greater impact on your life. Along with your score, you'll receive a summary of the most impactful symptoms and information on how your score compares to others like you.

Other menopause symptom scoring questionnaires have been used in the past by academics and clinicians. The MenoScale improves upon these pre-existing scoring tools in a number of ways, to deliver a unique offering:

  • Symptoms we assess are informed by how common they are, using data from our study of over 70,000 women.

  • Language used to ask about symptoms is modern and accessible

  • We assess impact on quality of life in a succinct and user-friendly format.

  • The MenoScale will be available online and is open access, allowing women to assess themselves.

Why should I use the MenoScale Calculator?

If you can’t measure it, you can’t change it. Having a score allows you to:

  1. Understand what you are experiencing: Identify your symptoms and how they impact you.

  2. Discuss your symptoms with data: Have meaningful, data-backed conversations about your symptoms and learn how to take charge of your experience.

  3. Track your score over time: After making diet and lifestyle changes, use the calculator again and track your score. Learn what works for your body.

How do I use the MenoScale Calculator?

Use your score to take charge of your menopause. The MenoScale calculator is open access and free to use by anyone experiencing menopausal symptoms, whether you are taking HRT or not. Tracking your MenoScale score can help you understand how any intervention - whether that’s diet, medication, or any lifestyle changes - impacts your menopause symptoms. The MenoScale score can be used to share with others, in order to compare experiences. It also allows you to make data-backed decisions about what lifestyle changes work for you. Our research shows associations between better diet and fewer menopause symptoms. Repeat your calculation after making changes, to track your score over time and see what’s working.

Is the MenoScale Calculator based on scientific research?

The MenoScale calculator is a result of our research: the largest ever menopause study into the link between diet and menopause. This study pioneered our first version of the MenoScale, called the ‘Menopause Symptom Tracker Score’, used to collect data from over 70,000 women. With key insights from this research, we created a new and improved version, called the MenoScale calculator, which can be used by women, clinicians, and researchers to drive forward the boundaries of what we know about menopause.
