We are excited to announce the launch of ZOE 2.0, our latest step toward revolutionizing gut health and improving the health of millions.

The new ZOE app isn’t just another food tracker or calorie counter. It’s a personalised nutrition science powerhouse based on the world’s largest nutrition and microbiome science study — built to help people eat mindfully and take control of their health every day.

Here, we’ll introduce you to ZOE’s new approach and the science behind it.

We don't buy the hype — and neither should you

Our new app reveals what the food labels won't, using data from the world's largest nutrition study run by ZOE.

Why is ZOE changing?

Over the last 8 years, ZOE’s original test kits have been used by hundreds of thousands of people to help them improve their health with personalized advice.

Using the wealth of data shared by our Members, we have developed ever-deeper insights into links between gut health and overall health:

Gut health is health.

Using these insights, we’ve designed ZOE 2.0, which includes deeper insights into your biology and cutting-edge AI-based features.

We have removed the need for eating cookies, blood fat, and continuous glucose monitors from ZOE 2.0.

This is because, thanks to the data we have collected, our ZOE algorithm can now predict your blood fat and blood glucose response by asking carefully selected health questions.

This means your advice is instantly personalized when you download the app. No waiting times and instant access to our science.

We have also kept our state-of-the-art gut microbiome test as an optional add-on, as gut health remains front and center at ZOE.

ZOE’s mission has always been to improve the health of millions, so we knew we needed to make our technology more accessible. So, we have made ZOE 2.0 available at our lowest ever price.

But what do you get in our new app?

Photologging: Simple, speedy, accurate

ZOE 2.0 uses advanced AI photologging to track your food intake and help you navigate our increasingly confusing food environment.

Simply by snapping a product or meal, you’ll get deep nutrition insights in seconds. Just one photo will tell you:

  • What ingredients it contains.

  • The macronutrient content: Fibre, carbs, and protein.

  • How much energy it provides.

  • Whether the level of processing is risky (more on this below).

  • How many plants it contains.

Each product or meal generates a score from 0–100, so you can tell how it is likely to influence your health at a glance. Here’s what those scores mean:

  • 0–24 Once in a while: There are no foods you can never eat. It's okay to eat these items, but it's best to have them rarely or in small quantities. These aren’t everyday foods.

  • 25–49 Enjoy in moderation: There are healthier alternatives to these foods, but having them in normal quantities from time to time (2–3 times per week) is acceptable.

  • 50–74 Enjoy regularly: You can eat these foods regularly (every other day). However, large quantities may have a negative impact.

  • 75–100 Enjoy freely: These foods are the best for your health. You can have them frequently (every day) and in generous quantities.

As a science-first company, we recently ran a study that showcases the accuracy of our photologging. Read more about that research here.

Using this scientifically validated tool can transform your understanding of the food on your plate.

Photologging means that whatever you’re tracking, whether it’s the quality of your diet through the ZOE score, macros, calories, or plants, ZOE 2.0 can help.

It tells you what each product or meal contains and tracks this information throughout the day so that you can stay on top of your health goals.

Plus, ZOE 2.0 is available at our lowest ever price, and you can become a member now.

ZOE Processed Food Risk Scale

Food processing is a hot topic of discussion. Research over the years has found links between increased intakes of highly processed foods and a range of health conditions.

However, the latest studies have shown that not all highly processed foods are equally damaging to health.

This makes navigating the grocery store challenging: How do you know which products are genuinely risky and which are fine?

This is where ZOE 2.0 comes into its own. Our scientists have built a new processing classification system that takes a number of important factors into account:

  • Energy density: How many calories per gram of food.

  • Energy intake rate: How quickly you eat the calories.

  • Hyperpalatability: This can lead to excess consumption.

  • Non-culinary additives: These include artificial colors, sweeteners, and preservatives. We accounted for whether the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or other official bodies deem them neutral or harmful to human health outcomes.

Scientists believe that these are the most important factors when considering the health impact of a processed food. Our app provides the level of risk in five simple categories:

  • Unprocessed: This food is in its original form or close to its original form. Processing does not impact how healthy it is.

  • No Risk: Minimal processing that poses no risk to health.

  • Low Risk: The processing of this food has no or very low impact on its health.

  • Medium Risk: The processing of this food may make it less healthy and could have a moderate impact on your health.

  • Highest Risk: The processing of this food makes it less healthy and could have a high impact on your health.

ZOE 2.0 finally removes the confusion we’ve all felt when choosing food. From just one barcode scan or photograph, you can understand how risky a product is and how it might affect your long-term health.

No need to decode food labels or cut through food marketing hype: the Risk Scale tells you what you need to know for your health, instantly.

Introducing Ziggie

Ziggie is your in-app nutrition coach who makes it incredibly easy to understand complex science, celebrate your wins and streaks, and build new healthy habits that stick.

It’s like having a professor in your pocket.

Ziggie also guides you through lessons in nutrition science so you can understand not just what you should eat, but why.

Our new app doesn’t just provide dietary advice; it helps you grow your understanding of food and its impact on your health.

ZOE’s gut microbiome test and new insights

As we mentioned, ZOE 2.0 is more cost-effective than ever and available to download now with all of the features we’ve outlined. And if you want to dive deeper into your gut health, you can have a gut microbiome test.

ZOE’s gut microbiome test is one of the most advanced on the market, and provides deep insights into the microbes you have in your gut and how those microbes may be related to your health.

Once you’ve received your gut health tests, the app will provide foods you should include to promote the growth of “good” microbes that you lack.

It will also share foods you should limit to reduce the number of “bad” bacteria that you harbor.

We’ve now introduced a global gut microbiome scale that pools data from the UK and the US. Rather than a score out of 100, you now get a score out of 1,000 to provide a more granular picture of your gut health.

We’ve also introduced “gut clusters” to help you understand how your gut microbes influence important aspects of your health.

“For years, we’ve shown that your gut microbiome is related to health, but we haven’t known how. Now, with over 300,000 gut samples analyzed, we know it’s crucial for how you feel every day and how you can add healthy decades to your life.”

“Our gut microbiome test is simple but powerful and brings the newest way to measure health. It's science in your pocket, and it will change your life like it did mine.”

Prof. Tim Spector, ZOE’s Scientific Co-Founder.
