General

Does ZOE work?

Yes. ZOE has been proven to improve health outcomes, as evidenced by our randomised controlled trial (RCT). We found that ZOE members who followed our advice felt better, reporting improved mood, better sleep quality, more energy, reduced hunger, and significantly improved gut health. Read more about our RCT.

We also have evidence from our microbiome retesting data that members who follow ZOE advice see an improvement in their gut microbiome score. When retested, of the 476 members in our pilot, 77% of ZOE members increased their microbiome score by following our advice.

This research was conducted using the original ZOE App and test kit. However, our way of delivering advice through food and meal scores remains fundamentally the same.

How does ZOE differ from other personalised nutrition programmes?

ZOE is a nutrition science company leading the gut health revolution.

ZOE is scientifically rigorous in its approach, unrivalled by any company in the industry in terms of randomised controlled trials, robust scientific research, and a dedicated team of scientists and nutrition professionals looking to improve health through practical, evidence-based advice.

Our classic test kit, which dates back to our very first twins study almost eight years ago, helped us deliver over 300,000 microbiome tests. This is 300 times larger than the previous record for peer-reviewed science linking microbiome, nutrition, and health.

We now have the largest microbiome database on the planet, which allows us to deliver personalised nutrition you can’t get anywhere else.

What are ZOE’s science credentials?

ZOE was co-founded by Professor Tim Spector OBE, a medical doctor who worked in the NHS for many years, and Professor of Epidemiology at King’s College London. Our Chief Scientist, Sarah Berry, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London and her research focuses on precision nutrition, postprandial metabolism, fat and food  structure.

A full list of our Scientific Advisory Board can be found here.

ZOE is scientifically rigorous in its approach, unrivalled by others in the industry in terms of clinical trials, robust research and a dedicated team of scientists and nutrition professionals looking to improve health through useful, evidence-based advice. We have over 30 peer-reviewed published papers on the science that has been built into the programme, and we're transparent about our science, sharing our breakthrough findings with the public, academic conferences and the scientific community through high-impact publications that undergo a peer review process. Our ZOE Science & Nutrition podcast features the world’s leading scientists who explain the latest research in an accessible way to millions of listeners.

Where is ZOE available?

The ZOE membership is available in the UK mainland, including Scottish Highlands and NI. The ZOE program is not currently available in Jersey or Guernsey.

I am a ZOE COVID/Health Study Contributor. What is the relationship between ZOE membership and the COVID/Health Study?

First, thank you for taking part in the ZOE COVID/Health Study! It's thanks to contributors like you that we've been able to help in the fight against COVID-19 and chronic diseases. ZOE was founded in 2018 with the goal of using new technologies like machine learning and microbiome sequencing to conduct nutritional science at an unprecedented scale.

Our PREDICT 1 & 2 studies, the largest nutrition studies of their kind, formed the scientific foundation of ZOE Membership. When the pandemic hit, we rapidly applied our expertise to study COVID-19 at a global scale. The ZOE Health Study is an evolution of that work, where we continue to research the immune system and how everyday behaviours can reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

ZOE Membership is a separate offering that gives you personalised advice based on the scientific insights from our studies.

I have a medical condition. Is ZOE suitable for me?

ZOE does not diagnose, prevent, or treat any medical conditions or diseases. If you have any underlying health conditions, you should consult your doctor before joining ZOE.

Eating disorders: We do not recommend the ZOE App if you have an active eating disorder. If you have a history of eating disorders, our app may be triggering, so please check with your GP or doctor before signing up.

Gut issues: You are not eligible to use the ZOE App or Gut Health Test if you have undergone an ileostomy or colostomy.

If you have gut issues (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and/or celiac disease) or a sensitive gut (e.g., irritable bowel syndrome), then you may use the ZOE App and Gut Health Test. However, you should understand that our advice is for general wellness purposes only and is not specifically formulated for your condition. Some diet changes we recommend, such as increasing fibre and diversifying your plant intake, have been shown to trigger adverse responses in some people with a sensitive gut. While we give advice that is suitable for most people, following our advice could make your condition worse.

Chronic conditions and diabetes: We may ask about your personal and family medical history, including any diagnoses of cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, and/or high blood pressure. We may also ask if you take medication for high cholesterol, high blood fat, and/or high blood pressure. If we do, we factor this into our advice. However, you should understand that our advice is for general wellness purposes only and is not specifically designed to manage any medical condition.

While we may factor some conditions into our advice, our guidance is for general wellness and is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.

Chemotherapy: We do not recommend doing the Gut Health Test if you are undergoing chemotherapy treatment. It is possible to do the test, but it will have a significant impact on your results.

I am on a GLP-1, can I use ZOE?

Yes, ZOE is safe to use while on a GLP-1 for weight loss. In fact, using ZOE alongside a GLP-1 is an opportunity to develop healthy, sustainable eating habits that may set you up for long-term success.

ZOE Testing

There are many gut microbiome tests on the market. Why ZOE?

Our Gut Health Test uses an advanced technique called shotgun metagenomics. We analyse your entire microbiome by looking at the DNA of your gut microbes. This allows us to identify the individual "good" and "bad" bacteria in your gut — we've even discovered hundreds of species of bacteria that are entirely new to science.

ZOE has identified clusters of microbes that are consistently linked with key areas of health, including inflammation and immunity, body fat distribution, blood sugar control, and heart and cholesterol health.

Unlike many other tests, which focus on a single gene, ours looks at a much wider range, giving you a truly comprehensive analysis.

I’m not sure about collecting my poo. Will it need to be stored in my fridge?

The poo test is easy to collect and comes with step-by-step instructions to help you. The sample goes into a solution that preserves it, so there is no need to store it in your fridge. Phew!

How does ZOE analyse my gut microbiome?

Using a technique called shotgun metagenomics, ZOE can get a read of all the different types of bacteria in your sample. This allows us to identify and measure every bacteria present — even the ones that exist in tiny amounts. We can then understand what these microbes are doing and how they work together, giving us a complete picture of your unique gut community and how it impacts your health.

How long after ordering my test kit can I expect it to arrive?

We aim to send your kit within 3-5 working days. You can also track your order status by visiting zoe.com/account/order-history

How quickly should I do my tests?

You must complete your testing tasks within 6 months of receiving your test kit. After this time, you will not be able to complete testing, and we will not be responsible for shipping a replacement kit.

What do I need to complete on my testing day?

On your testing day, you'll find everything you need in your Gut Health Test kit. You can complete each part in just 3 easy steps:

  1. Scan the barcode on your testing tube.

  2. Collect a small stool sample using our hygienic kit.

  3. Package and mail your sample.

The entire process should take about 5-10 minutes.

How often can I test my gut microbiome?

You can retest your microbiome at any time, but we recommend doing so every four months. This keeps your advice up to date and helps you stay on track as your gut health changes.

Results & Programme

How long can I expect to wait after testing to receive results?

After you complete and return your tests, it takes about 3-4 weeks for our labs to process your samples. We'll send you an email as soon as your results are ready to view in the ZOE App.

In some cases, results may take longer due to retesting. If we need you to repeat your test, we will contact you immediately, and you can expect to receive your results within 3-4 weeks of retesting.

How does ZOE define ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bugs?

We recently made a breakthrough discovery in gut microbiome science, identifying the top 50 ‘good’ bugs associated with good health markers, and the 50 ‘bad’ bugs associated with bad health markers. This is based on our analysis of 35,000 stool samples, enabling us to identify thousands of bacteria that are entirely new to science. Read more here.

What are bug clusters?

ZOE has identified clusters of microbes that are consistently linked with key areas of health, including inflammation and immunity, body fat distribution, blood sugar control, and heart and cholesterol health.

How is my microbiome score calculated?

Your ZOE microbiome score measures the balance of 50 "good" and 50 "bad" gut bacteria identified by ZOE scientists for their connection to key positive and negative health markers.

This score gives you a clear picture of how well your gut supports your overall health, including blood sugar control, blood fat levels, and inflammation. It reflects both the presence and abundance of these microbes, based on advanced DNA sequencing of your gut microbiome.

What are gut boosters and gut suppressors?

Gut Boosters are specific foods that may encourage the growth of your "good" gut bugs.

Gut Suppressors are foods that may suppress the growth of your "good" gut bugs.

These are personalised to you based on your unique gut microbiome test results, helping you make smarter food choices to improve your gut health.

What if I don't have blood test results available? Are my scores still personalised?

Yes, your scores are still personalised to you. We use the most advanced science to combine your dietary data and health history to give you a personalised experience. Providing blood test results allows us to give you even more personalisation in the app.

I tried to enter my blood test results, but one of them was outside the accepted range. What does this mean?

To ensure the accuracy of your health data, we've set a range for the blood test results you enter. If your result falls outside of this range, please double-check that you've used the correct unit (like mmol/L or %) and that the number you've entered matches what's on your GP or doctor’s report.

I didn't enter my blood test results in onboarding in the app, but can I give them to you now?

Yes, you'll be able to add your blood test results to your profile soon. We're working on this feature, so please check back in the app for updates.

Technology

Do I need a smartphone to access ZOE?

Yes. Here are the device requirements:

  • iPhone or an Android smartphone:

    • If you have an iPhone smartphone: iPhones require iOS 15.1 or later. We do not support iPad.

    • If you have an Android smartphone (Samsung, Google, LG, Motorola, etc.): Androids require Android 8.0 or later.

Cancellations & Refunds

What is your returns & refund policy on Gut Health Test Kits?

    • If you decide to cancel quickly, we may be able to cancel the despatch of your order, saving the need to return the box. We typically start preparing your order within 24-48 hours, although it may happen sooner. While we cannot guarantee this, if we are able to cancel despatch, we will refund you for the test kit in full.

    • If you cancel within 14 days of receiving your kit and return an unopened box, you'll receive a full refund for the kit, minus return postage charges.

    • If you cancel within 14 days, have opened the box, but have not yet sent off your sample, we will refund you, deducting the unit cost of the test kit and return postage charges.

To cancel your order, please email hello@joinzoe.com.

How do I update or cancel my ZOE membership?

  • During the first 14 days after purchase, you have the right to cancel your membership and receive a full refund. To do so, email hello@joinzoe.com. After this point, your membership purchase is final and will continue for at least the period you have committed to.

  • You can opt out of automatic renewal through your ZOE account at any time before the end of your membership period. Alternatively, you can email hello@joinzoe.com at least 3 working days before it ends. This will stop any future payments and end your membership. Note that opting out of automatic renewal does not result in immediate cancellation and does not entitle you to a refund of membership charges already paid.

  • During the first 14 days after automatic renewal, you have a right to cancel it in the first 14 days after renewal and receive a refund. To do so, email hello@joinzoe.com. If you cancel after this period, the cancellation will be effective at the end of the period your membership has renewed for. So you will still be charged for the rest of that period, and may continue to use the ZOE App.

  • You can email us at hello@joinzoe.com if you would prefer to change the length of your membership period for your next membership period. You will need to let us know at least 3 working days ahead of your renewal date. This will take effect on expiry of your current membership period.

You can manage your membership directly in the ZOE App. Go to Settings > Account settings > Membership. You can also manage your membership by logging into your account at zoe.com/account

Please note that, if you do not have a ZOE Membership (e.g., if you cancel), you will not have access to the ZOE App or any Gut Health Test results.

Is Daily30+ made from organic and sustainable ingredients?

While we try to source organic ingredients, this is not always possible for some of the plants in Daily30+, either because there is not a reliable source of organic options or because these options are not as high-quality.

We are constantly working to improve the organic makeup of our product. Our ingredients are sourced to be of the highest quality, and all our suppliers must comply with strict sustainability standards.

What are the results from your study on Daily30+?

Our study was done as part of the development process for Daily30+, and we have since made some small changes. This means the results apply to a slightly different recipe than the one we currently sell, but we think the changes we have made make it better! We will be retesting again later this year.

BIOME was a randomised controlled trial (RCT) with 399 people, with the final analysis on 349 people over 6 weeks. Participants were all healthy, 76% women, 24% men with a mean age 51 years recruited from the ZOE Health Study. The study had 3 arms: a functional control arm: consumed bread croutons (28g/day), intervention 1: consumed Daily30+ (30g/day i.e. 2 scoops) and intervention 2: took a daily probiotic (1 capsule/day).

The study found that the Daily30+ group saw significant change in gut microbiome composition to a healthier profile and higher score — an increase of 5 points on ZOE microbiome score in 6 weeks.

55% reported improvement in indigestion (vs. 36% in control)
35% reported improvement in constipation (vs 25% in control)
18% reported improvement in heartburn (vs 12% in control)
37% reported improvement in flatulence (vs 24% in control)
70% reported improvement in overall symptoms (vs 56% in control)
51% reported improvement in energy (vs 37% in control)
45% reported improvement in mood (happiness) (vs 30% in control)
35% reported improved sleep quality (vs 20% in control)
98.3% compliance — this is excellent for an RCT.

ZOE Health Study

Who created the ZOE Health Study?

The ZOE Health Study was created by ZOE – a health science company working in partnership with doctors and scientists at King’s College London.

The app was initially used to study the symptoms of COVID-19 and track the spread of this virus. It then expanded its research mission to investigate health issues beyond COVID-19 and explore how nutrition and lifestyle interventions can work in a real world setting.

This research is led by Prof. Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London and director of TwinsUK.

Why can’t I log into the Health Study App anymore?

The ZOE Health Study app has been deactivated as this research phase has come to an end. All involvement has helped to advance vital scientific understanding. While you can no longer log in, we're securely archiving the data and continuing to build on the insights from this work.

Is the Health Study App permanently shut down?

Yes, the ZOE Health Study app has been permanently deactivated as this phase of the research has concluded. While the app is no longer available, the valuable data collected will continue to support scientific research.

I was using the app regularly - what should I do now?

Now that the Health Study app has been deactivated, there’s no action you need to take. Your past participation continues to support important research behind the scenes.

Why was the app deactivated without notice?

The app was deactivated as part of the wrap-up of this phase of the study. Fewer than 0.3% of initial users remained active compared to 2020, and it became clear that for data integrity and user privacy reasons it was right to end the data collection now.

What’s happening with the Health Study now?

The ZOE Health Study app is now permanently offline, the data has been securely archived and the studies have concluded. This won’t affect your results or any of the contributions you have already made. There are a number of research streams with King’s College London that will continue to utilise this invaluable data to progress research.

Why wasn’t I informed about this sooner?

The app was deactivated as part of the wrap-up of this phase of the study. We recognise that this felt abrupt, due to our focus on the data security and safety measures.

Can I still be involved in the Health Study in some way?

This phase of the ZOE Health Study has now concluded, and the app is no longer active. However, there are a number of research streams that will continue to utilise this invaluable data to progress research.

Will this affect my results or anything I’ve already done?

No, the conclusion of this phase and the app’s closure will not affect your results or any contributions you’ve made. All data you provided remains part of the study and continues to support valuable research.

Is there another ZOE programme I can take part in instead?

We’re continually developing new research studies and have published over 75 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals, and we’d love to keep you involved. In the meantime, you can also try a ZOE test to gain personalized insights about your metabolic and gut health.

Is my data still safe and secure?

Yes, it is. Your data is protected and your privacy is our top priority. In closing the app, we are now archiving the data, which means keeping it in a more secure location in our systems. To further protect participant privacy, we have removed all of the identifiers from the dataset (e.g. name, email, exact date of birth).

Will my data be deleted now that the app is gone?

While we have closed the app, we are retaining the study data, because it still has huge potential for important scientific and health research. Your daily check-ins and commitment helped to shape one of the most impactful community science initiatives in global history and your participation has already supported dozens of peer-reviewed publications. Your data will continue to be kept in accordance with our privacy policy and participant consents. However, to protect participant privacy, in archiving the data we are removing all of the identifiers from the dataset (e.g. name, email, exact date of birth).

Can I withdraw from the study or delete or access my data if I want to?

It is still possible to withdraw so that you are not contacted by email in connection with future research studies.

However, because the study data has been de-identified (with personal identifiers like name, email, and date of birth removed), we are not in a position identify individual records or fulfil any data requests.

I still have a question about ZOE Health Study

Investor Questions

How can I get updates on ZOE’s performance?

Transparency is one of our values and we provide quarterly email updates on our performance to all our owners. If you’re not receiving these when you think you should be, please contact us at zoeowners@joinzoe.com.

What is ZOE’s latest valuation or share price?

As a private company, our shares are not publicly traded on a stock exchange, and therefore, there is no continuously quoted "share price" or daily market valuation.

There are different valuation methods for private companies, given there is no publicly traded share price. One such widely accepted valuation method is to value a company at the price at which it most recently raised capital from investors.

ZOE raised capital at a share price of £0.50958 per share in the 2022 crowdfunding round. This valuation was underpinned by investment from institutional investors in ZOE’s Series B equity round. In July 2024, a new institutional investor invested $15m at the same underlying Series B valuation.

When will there be an opportunity to invest again in ZOE?

Thank you for your continued support in helping ZOE achieve its mission of transforming the health of millions! While it is not possible to invest at this time, we hope to create opportunities for our owners to increase their investment in the future.

How can I sell my shares?

As a private company, there is no public stock exchange for trading our shares. Potential future liquidity events for selling shares might include a future public offering (IPO) or acquisition. As at July 2025, there are no planned upcoming liquidity events for ZOE.

When will there be an exit event where I can sell my shares, e.g., a public offering (IPO), acquisition, or other liquidity event?

As a private company, there is typically no public market for our shares. An exit event, such as a public offering (IPO) or an acquisition by another company, is a significant strategic decision that depends on various market conditions, company performance, and growth objectives. While we are continuously working to maximise shareholder value, we cannot provide specific timelines for such events. Any potential liquidity event would be communicated to our shareholders with prior notice and in accordance with our Articles of Association and relevant legal requirements. We prioritise building a sustainable and valuable business that can provide long-term returns for our investors.

When will you start paying dividends?

As a growth-focused private company, our current strategy is to reinvest earnings back into the business to fuel our science, expansion, and long-term value creation. Therefore, we do not currently pay dividends. Any decision to initiate dividend payments would be a strategic one, based on sustained profitability, cash flow, and future growth opportunities, and would be communicated to shareholders in advance.
