ZOE Microbiome Ranking 2024

In over 34,000 US and UK individuals with metagenomic, diet, and cardiometabolic data, we identified 661 known and yet-to-be-cultured gut microbiome species significantly associated with different diets and cardiometabolic risk factors (see Asnicar et al, 2024, under review). We developed a ranking of species most favorably and unfavorably associated with human cardiometabolic health markers, called the "ZOE Microbiome Ranking 2024 (Cardiometabolic Health)". This ranking showed significant and reproducible associations with body mass index and diseases on more than 8,000 independent samples from publicly available metagenomic cohorts. The ranking was a more accurate proxy of individual hosts' health status than alpha diversity. We also defined a species ranking based only on dietary markers , called the "ZOE Microbiome Ranking 2024 (Diet)".

These rankings, are publicly released and maintained, and can be adopted by the academic research community to evaluate whether a given microbiome sample is characterized by more health-associated species or by species more typical of unfavorable diet and cardiometabolic conditions.

The rankings can be downloaded here.
