What to expect

We know that single aspects of metabolic health are only one piece of the puzzle, which is why we look at all three. Our results, published in Nature Medicine, show that everyone’s responses to food are unique — even identical twins, who share 100% of their genes.

Put your metabolism to the test with specially formulated muffins

We’ll send you standardized test meals in the form of vanilla muffins, which we make with a carefully controlled number of calories, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. These are the key to unlocking how your body responds to food.

See how your body responds to fats in food

By eating the muffins and then using the same finger-prick tests from our research at home, you'll help us measure how well your body clears fat from foods. This test is the only one available on the market that gives you insights into this aspect of your metabolic health.

Learn which ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria you have in your gut

You take a quick poop test, and we use the most advanced technique, called shotgun metagenomics. It looks at the DNA of your gut bacteria and lets us analyze your entire microbiome. From this, we can identify the individual “good” and “bad” bacteria in your gut.

Uncover how your body handles carbohydrate-rich foods

If you’re able to take part in our clinical trial, we’ll also send you a continuous glucose monitor, which is easy and painless to apply to your arm. It measures your blood sugar in real-time for up to 14 days throughout the testing period. Together, we can see your response before and after eating carb-rich foods.

Get meaningful and actionable insight specific to you

Combining all of your ZOE testing responses, we’ll send you a detailed report comparing your results to thousands of other people. We then help you put your insights into action with a personalized nutrition program built around your gut health and metabolism.

At ZOE, we empower you with the knowledge and tools you need to make the best choices for your body and health.

Frequently asked questions

Where is ZOE available to purchase?

The ZOE programme is now available for early access in the UK to people who joined our waitlist before 2022 and expect to be on general release next year. Sign up here to be updated on our progress and notified when you can join the ZOE programme.

We're widely available in the US too. If you're from another country, we'd love you to register your interest and join our waitlist so we can gauge demand as we expand.

How much will the ZOE programme cost?

There are two costs associated with ZOE: (1) testing (2) membership.

Testing: The total cost of the test kit is £259.99 and can be paid up front or in instalments. This includes:

  • Gut microbiome test
  • Blood fat test
  • Standardised test meals - muffins!
  • Real-time blood sugar sensor (CGM) if opted in to our science study
  • Gut health report
  • Personalised insights report

Membership: This phase turns the insights from your report into positive, long-lasting behavioural change. Week-by-week support retrains your body into eating according to your unique biology.

There are three different membership options: 1 month, 4 months, or 12 months. This is charged the day you receive your results, and auto-renews at the end of each period unless you reach out to us to cancel.

  • 1-month plan - £59.99 per month
  • 4-month plan - £34.99 per month
  • 12-month plan - £24.99 per month
Why do I have to join a study to have the blood sugar sensor?

To get a blood sugar sensor you must consent to our clinical study. There are no additional costs to you for having to do so. After purchasing a ZOE plan, you will be directed to a page where you are prompted to complete your order and consent to our study. To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You are at least 18 years of age
  • You live in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland
  • You have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 16.5kg/m2
  • You are not pregnant
  • You have not had a heart attack (myocardial infarction), stroke/transient ischemic attack or major surgery in the last two month
  • You can safely eat our test muffins (See 'Are your muffins suitable for vegans or vegetarians?' above for the ingredient list)
  • If you are being treated for chronic medical conditions (including type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes), you have checked with your doctor that this product is safe for you (note that to participate in the PREDICT 3 study you must not have been diagnosed with eating disorders, type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes)
How does ZOE analyse my gut microbiome?

There's a variety of next-generation sequencing approaches for studying the human microbiome. We chose shotgun metagenomics as it is the most comprehensive approach at sampling the whole DNA content of a microbiome.

This technique can detect very low abundance members of the microbial community (i.e. those found in very small numbers) that may be missed using other methods and provides information about the metabolic processes and functions present within a microbial community.

You can learn more about how we analyse your gut microbiome here.

Do I need  a smartphone to use ZOE?

Yes. The ZOE app is currently available on both iOS (iPhone or iPad with iOS version 13.2 or later) and Android devices (Samsung, LG, Motorola etc. with Android 8.0 or later).

You'll also need to download and use the Abbott FreeStyle LibreLink app if you've opted-in to our study and will be using the blood sugar sensor.

UK

In order to be able to opt-in to the study, your phone must be compatible with the Abbott FreeStyle LibreLink app.

Device requirements:

iiPhone iOS 13.2 or later and an iPhone 7 or newer. / iPhone SE (2nd gen). We can't support iPads

Android 8.0 or later. The oldest Android devices supported are: Galaxy Note 8, S7 Edge, S8, S8+, S9, S10; Google Pixel, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL; LG Nexus 5X. You'll also need to check you can install apps from the Google Play Store (some recent Huawei phones cannot)

Can I buy the tests individually, without membership?

No, ZOE tests cannot be bought without a membership. The scientific insights from our tests are powerful, but it's the ZOE programme's membership that turns them into long-lasting habits.

The app gives you access to your personalised ZOE Scores for any food or meal, access to our team of expert nutrition coaches and daily bite-sized lessons designed to help you reach your goals.

Taking the tests alone makes achieving long-term health goals harder for our members, so we do not recommend it.
